Founded 1799. Getting a nasty reputation as a destroyer of other breweries (Ridley's being the latest victim.) Quite how they can justify selling a beer called Ruddles County when it's significantly weaker than the original Rutland brew, is hard o understand. In early 2004 production of the mild was transferred to Ridley's brewery.
The brewery's already poor reputation has been further diminished by its dishonest advertising and point-of-sale materials which give the impression that IPA was the 2004 Champion Beer of Britain when it was actually winner in the Bitter class and runner up overall.

Reported by the first edition of the Good Beer Guide as offering 'First rate beers too often spoilt by pressurisation.'
